What can I do for my 1year olds stuffy nose at night?

November 7th, 2009

For 3 nights now he has been fussy and restless at night because his nose is so stuffy. He snores really loud and it seems that he stops breathing for a sec and then stirs and whimpers. I sprayed some of that Ocean for kids and that didn’t really help. I tried to suck the snot out but that didn’t really work. I gave him some Bynidril and I think that helped after holding him in the recliner for an hour then finally laid him down on a pillow elevating him.

you could keep trying the sprays and the suction things but that never worked for us, what i did (and i know some people might not like this) was just used ordinary vicks rub, you dont need as much as you wold use on yourself, or if you wanna spend the extra money for almost the exactly same product buy the baby vicks, but dont just put it on his chest and back… put some on his feet and cover them with socks or in a footed sleeper, it sounds weird but the vicks on his feet will clear him up, or atleast long enough so he can get some sleep

DO NOT GIVE BENADRYL the baby is to young, and can cause long term neuro problems. Little noses makes saline drops, which sprays to , don’t spray use the drops, it will break up the mucus, which will help you suction. Other than that a cool vaporizor, or warm showers will help.

I bought my neice who is 6 months old that saline nosespray called lil noses. I did use the dreaded suction thing after 10 minutes of spraying her nose and she was able to breathe. Good luck hope u find something that helps. I have bad allergies and know how hard it is to sleep or eat with a stopped up nose.

Benadryl will only dry the snot making it harder for it be sucked out. Put a cool mist humidifier in his room and keep his head elevated. Put saline drops in his nose right before you put him to bed so that he doesn’t get dried out.

There are NO safe decongestants for babies.

Elevate your babies crib, get a warm air vaporizer for your babies room. Make an appointment with your child’s pediatrician. I would be concerned with the breathing issues, he may have sleep apnea and could possibly need his adenoids taken out. My daughter did this at age 4. But, I would first consult with your doctor.
