I deal with the same thing. It's unusual that he wouldn't stop if he's on his side - maybe try nudging him to sleep on his stomach. My husband will definitely slow down if I get him to roll on his side - or spooning me!
I have a cool mist humidifier going all the time in the winter, then switch to a fan in the summer - for the background noise. I also have talk radio on.
Is he overweight? Often that can be a cause - though it isn't in my husband's case.
Some universities have sleep centres, which shouldn't cost anything for him to get checked out since they use it as a teaching tool.
Otherwise, get HIM to go on the couch.
But I am concerned about his response to you when you bring it up - he's not being very understanding...
