You can try a cool mist vaporizer in his room

Moist air is helpful - even holding him in your lap and sitting in a bathroom, while you have a hot shower running so that the air will be war and moist - sometimes helps

Give him lots of fluids to drink although he might not want to if it is hard for him to breath

Sometimes sucking lollipops or popsickles

I would be concerned with the breathing issues, he may have sleep apnea and could possibly need his adenoids taken out.  My daughter did this at age 4.
